Macbeth
Back
Macbeth
and Banquo are two heroes returning from a battle.
They meet three witches who say that Macbeth will be Thane of Glamis
(which he already is), Thane of Cawdor, and finally King of Scotland.
Macbeth does
become Thane of Cawdor. His wife
persuades Macbeth to murder the king, so he can become king too (and she will be
queen).
Macbeth kills King Duncan, his sons (Malcolm and Donalbain) flee, and Macbeth is crowned king.
Macbeth goes
back to the witches and is told three things: he should beware MacDuff, he
can’t be harmed by anyone of woman born, and he is safe until Birnam Wood
moves to Dunsinane (one of Macbeth’s castles).
Eventually,
Lady Macbeth goes mad and dies, and Malcolm leads an army to attack Macbeth.
They use branches from the trees of Birnam Wood as a disguise as they
move to attack Dunsinane. MacDuff,
who is not woman born, but was cut from his mother’s body, slays Macbeth and
Malcolm is crowned king.
